It is located 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of the City of London, north of the River Thames (the Woolwich Ferry and Woolwich foot trench provide the only crossings to the south), and is bordered on the west by the River Lea and the east by the North Circular Road. The 2012 summer Olympics considered Newham as one of the hosts. It contains the London City Airport and most of the Olympic Park, including the London Stadium. East Ham, Stratford, Plaistow, Forest Gate, and Canning Town are central districts.

Grassroots is located in Memorial Recreation Ground, E15 Rosetta Art Centre, close to Grassroots.
