Enfield is a significant town and former parish in the administrative county of Greater London and the ancient county of Middlesex in north London, England. It has 156,858 people and is located 10.1 miles (16.3 km) north-northeast of Charing Cross.
It neighbors Waltham Cross to the north, Winchmore Hill and Edmonton to the south, Chingford and Waltham Abbey to the east and north-east, and Cockfosters, Monken Hadley, and Oakwood to the west, all of which are located south of the Hertfordshire border and the M25 motorway.
It was given urban district status in 1894 and municipal borough status in 1955. It was formerly an ancient parish in the Edmonton Hundred of Middlesex. It combined with the city boroughs of Southgate and Edmonton in 1965 to form the London Council of Enfield, a Greater London local government district with Enfield as its administrative center.
On the north side of the bazaar, a parish church is dedicated to St Andrew. Although there is some thirteenth-century masonry, the nave, north aisle, choir, and tower are late fourteenth-century structures made of random rubble and flint. The south aisle was restored in brick in 1824, and the clerestory dates from the early sixteenth century. Enfield Grammar School, a historic Tudor school building adjacent to the church, has developed throughout the years, becoming a big community school in the late 1960s.
