The A5 is a significant thoroughfare that runs along the western edge of the borough. It is also England's earliest Roman-built road. Watling Street was afterward given to it by the Anglo-Saxons. The Great North Road runs through the borough, beginning in East Finchley and ending in Monken Hadley in Hertfordshire. It was a postal coach service that ran between London, York, and Edinburgh. The several inns along the route supplied lodging, horse stalls, and replacement mounts. Through Mill Hill, a segment of the A1 road was built to circumvent this route, finally connecting with the Great North Road at Hatfield.
