Harun, a Dane, owned the manor of Meretone and the neighboring manor of Piddington just before the Norman conquest of England. The toponym comes from the Old English for a mere tun, hamlet, or community.
By 1086, the estate was held by Countess Judith of Lens, a niece of William I of England, according to the Domesday Book. Simon, I de Senlis was Countess Judith's betrothed, but she refused to marry him and departed England. Simon was allowed to marry Judith's eldest daughter Maud when William I confiscated her holdings. As the honor of Huntingdon, Simon acquired properties such as Merton.
The Decorated Gothic parish church of Saint Swithun, built early in the 14th century, is a Church of England parish church. It contains a south aisle connected to the nave by a four-bay arcade. The core received a Perpendicular Gothic clerestory in the late 15th century. Perpendicular Gothic windows may also be found in the chancel and the south aisle. The font dates from the late 12th century are substantially older than the church.
